The Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area has quickly become one of the top gaming markets in the U.S., and its crown jewel, MGM National Harbor, was the highest-earning commercial casino outside of Nevada last year, according to data from the American Gaming Association (AGA).
Per the AGA, the property brought in a cool $884.46 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in 2022, which represented nearly half (43.12 percent) of all the GGR generated by Maryland casinos.
The market as a whole came in third in the U.S., behind only Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
Experts have attributed the property’s success to its ideal location, the plethora of bars, retail stores and dining options nearby and its close proximity to the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.
Bill Ordine from Gambling.com said that the property is “uniquely positioned in a dining and entertainment district, and not far away is the Gaylord Hotel, a major conference and convention center, so they’ve got things going for them at National Harbor that other casinos don’t have going for them.”
Maryland also legalized retail and mobile sports betting in the last two years, which has added additional revenue streams to the property.
Live! Casino and Hotel in Hanover came in second in the market’s rankings, bringing in 34 percent of the total GGR. It ranked as the fifth-best commercial casino outside of Nevada.
