The Greek government is reportedly planning to repurpose a former U.S. military base on the island of Crete as a new casino.
According to eKathemerini.com, in 2018 the former Syriza government passed a law to issue casino licenses for Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, but no action was taken due to environmental concerns.
In October 2019, the incoming New Democracy government chose a model for Gournes similar to that employed for the old Athens airport plot at Elliniko. The new plan squeaked by in a vote by the Regional Council on January 17. The plan is part of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, or TAIPED, which hopes to create a “mini Elliniko” on Crete.
The plot totals 345,000 square meters (about 74 square acres) and has been split into two development zones: Zone 1 will host a theme park, shopping center and recreational facilities, and Zone 2 will be dedicated to tourist and entertainment developments such as a mini-golf course, a hotel, holiday homes and the casino.
