India’s Law Commission is set to propose regulations to control illegal online betting.

Among the regulations would be a restriction allowing gamblers to only place three online bets a year. Local reports quote unnamed officials saying that short of a complete ban, the commission is recommending stringent regulations.

According to a rough draft of the regulations cited by local media, gamblers could only place bets through licensed sites. Operators will require information on income and total property of the person placing bets to allow him or her place “high stake” or “low stake” bets. The distinction is designed ensure gamblers do not end up losing all their money and property.

The country’s Supreme Court asked the law panel to examine whether betting can be legalized in India.
