Indian State Gets Ready for Lotteries

Lawmakers in the Indian state of Meghalaya last week approved a set of rules that will govern a new lottery. Meghalaya is planning to re-launch the state lottery that was shut down in 2005.

Cabinet members in Meghalaya, India last week approved a regulatory framework for a new state lottery. The state is planning to re-launch the lottery that was shut down in 2005.

Meghalaya Home Minister James K. Sangma announced that both paper and online lotteries will be introduced, enabling participation by people from throughout India where lotteries are legal.

The Meghalaya state lottery was originally introduced in 2001 and run by MS Associates. Its mandated payment to the state was tripled in 2002; MS Associates stopped operations in 2005 and failed to pay the balance due.

With the establishment of new rules and their approval by the state cabinet, the taxation department is being tasked with working out details about the operations and tendering processes, report local media.
