Indian State Poised to Ban Online Gaming

The Indian state of Karnataka is preparing to amend existing law to make online gambling illegal. The action was requested by the High Court of Karnataka. Violators would be punished by up to three years in prison.

The Indian state of Karnataka is poised to amend the Karnataka Police Act to ban online gambling. A bill to accomplish that was taken up by the state legislature September 13.

Under the proposal, made at the request of the High Court of Karnataka, online gaming will be a crime and offenders could be sent to three years in prison.

The bill defines online gaming as: “involving all forms of wagering or betting including in the form of tokens valued in terms of money paid before or after the issue of it, or electronic means and virtual currency, electronic transfer of funds in connection with any game of chance.” Not covered will be lottery or horse racing.
