Indian State Pursues Online Gaming Ban

Despite being rocked back on its attempt to ban online gaming by a ruling of the Madras High Court, the government of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu insists it will ban such games.

On January 6, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin promised to end online games with stakes “soon.”

Last year the government adopted an ordinance making online games with stakes illegal, citing alleged examples of players committing suicide after losing large sums. But the Madras High Court overturned the ban after online operators sued. They argued that the ban was “overly paternalistic.”
