Indiana Bar Owner Arrested After 4-Year Investigation

Indiana authorities reportedly spent four years investigating Roger Padgett, owner of the Tuxedo Bar in Washington, before recently arresting him for “professional gambling.” He was released on $5,000 bond and could face up to 30 months in jail and a $10,000 fine. Illegal sports betting was reported at the bar in March 2014.

Roger Padgett, 59, recently was arrested on four counts of “professional gambling” in a raid on his Tuxedo Bar in Washington, Indiana. He was released on $5,000 bond. The Indiana Gaming Commission investigation reportedly lasted more than four years. Padgett was charged with the state’s lowest level of felony, potentially punishable by 6-30 months in jail and a fine up to $10,000.

The commission first received anonymous tips about the sports betting taking place at the Tuxedo Bar in March 2014. Undercover officers surveilled the establishment and reportedly, in fall 2014, examined garbage from the bar and Padgett’s personal trash. Agents said they found evidence of bookmaking, including documents that allegedly included sports betting records.

In addition, undercover state officials reportedly placed bets with Padgett throughout the course of the investigation. Three separate warrants for phone records related to Padgett’s alleged sports betting operation also were served. Authorities identified 33 people involved with betting with Padgett, but none of them were arrested, according to reports.
