In just six months of operations, Indiana’s shown that Hoosiers love a good sports bet.
On March 10, the Indiana Gaming Commission released figures showing that retail and online/mobile sportsbooks took a combined $187.1 million in wagers last month, a record handle for the state’s sports gambling market. Of that, revenue topped $11 million for a hold of 5.9 percent.
The handle exceeded $170.8 million in wagers in January. The month-over-month gain was 9.5 percent, eclipsing the 5.5 percent handle increase seen between December and January.
Indiana currently has six online/mobile sportsbooks: FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers, PointsBet, BetMGM, and BetAmerica. Combined, the online/mobile market raked in $145.8 million in wagers last month, 77.9 percent of the total handle.
Indiana sports wagering began last September with retail sportsbooks, and the first online/mobile platforms launched the following month starting with DraftKings and BetRivers.
DraftKings and FanDuel dominated in market with 94.5 percent of the online/mobile handle. DraftKings took in $74.1 million and FanDuel, $63.8 million, up 12.3 percent and 28.9 percent respectively over the prior month.
PointsBet launched last week. Unibet also signed an agreement with Caesars to launch sports betting in Indiana. Caesars’ Horseshoe Hammond, the closest casino to Chicago, again took the top spot for retail handle with $12.4 million. Ohio’s impact earned Penn National‘s Hollywood Lawrenceburg second place with $6.8 million in retail handle.
According to Hoosier State Bets, Indiana sportsbooks took wagers on XFL games, so the football handle included more than the Super Bowl in February. Basketball brought in more in $90.2 million in wagers, a 50.8 percent increase over January.
