NBA wagering propelled Indiana to its third highest handle in the 12 months of sports betting last month. The Indiana Gaming Commission said on September 11 that the state attracted a bit more than $169 million in action, which comes in behind $187 million in Super Bowl February and almost $171 million in NFL playoff January.
The handle exceeded the $70.8 million bet in July, a month that saw more traditional play after months of Covid-19 shut downs. Gross sports betting revenues for August from nine casinos and two horse racing tracks were slightly over $9.8 million with a 5.82 percent hold. But the state enjoyed $934,314 in taxes, 47 percent more than July, according to HoosierStateBets.com
Credit the NBA for the August results in a state renowned for basketball. The sport had the highest individual handle at $55.6 million, almost 10 times the July handle of $5.8 million. Indiana bettors also wagered $31 million on Major League Baseball, compared to $14.5 million in July.
