Indiana Takes Sports Betting Applications July 1

Applications for sports betting licenses at casinos, racinos and off-track betting establishments will be accepted by the Indiana Gaming Commission starting July 1. Online wagering could commence September 1 even if physical locations aren't ready. Meanwhile, Northwest Indiana casino operators are bracing for the impact of new Chicago area casinos.

The Indiana Gaming Commission will begin taking applications for sports betting licenses from casinos, racinos and off-track betting establishments on July 1. Executive Director Sara Gonso Tait said, “We want to do this as quickly as we can, but we want to do it responsibly.”

Tait said the commission hopes sports betting can be offered by September 1, but even if that’s not possible at physical locations, an online app may be ready.

Bettors must be at least 21 years of age to wager on professional and college sporting events from within the state. Betting on high school sports, youth sporting events and e-sports will be prohibited. Wagerers will set up accounts at casinos and racinos to bet in-person or online through mobile apps.

Sports betting could generate about $1.7 billion annually in direct and indirect economic impact, according to a gaming research firm study. It also found “mobile sports betting represents more than half of the total revenue potential of the Indiana market.”
