Interior’s Gavin Clarkson Fired

The deputy assistant secretary for policy and economic development for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Gavin Clarkson, has resigned. He was taken down by an Inspector General’s report on a tribal loan program he ran over which is being sued.

Gavin Clarkson, appointed deputy assistant for policy and economic development for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in June, has resigned.

He left the department after the Inspector General of the department gave a negative report on a tribal loan program he ran. The program included a $22.5 million loan to the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe that financed the purchase of a brokerage firm that went under. The department is being sued over its refusal to guarantee the $20 million balance on that loan.
