Iowa Approves Fantasy Sports Bill

A bill that recently passed the Iowa Senate State Government Committee would allow Iowans to win cash and other prizes playing fantasy sports. About 264,000 Iowans play the games, which are offered through major league sports websites, ESPN, Yahoo and other online content providers.

The Iowa Senate State Government Committee recently approved and sent to the full Senate a bill that would allow Iowans to win cash and other prizes while playing fantasy sports. Currently Iowa residents are barred from winning prizes and cash in fantasy sports leagues. An estimated 264,000 Iowans participate in the games, according to trade industry data. The games are offered through major league sports websites, ESPN, Yahoo and other online content providers.

In fantasy sports, people draft a team of actual college and professional athletes. A fantasy team manager will win or lose to other fantasy managers based on the performance of their athletes in real games.

A House subcommittee will consider similar legislation filed by state Rep. Jake Highfill.
