Wes Ehrecke, president of the Iowa Gaming Association, which represents 19 of the state’s casinos, recently said he has been in talks with legislators about allowing sports betting in casinos and on smartphone apps on professional and collegiate sports. “In Iowa, if we are proactive in getting this passed in the upcoming session and other states do not, that could be a real advantage. For patrons of Iowa, we believe many people are going to enjoy watching and betting on sports in regulated, legal environment,” Ehrecke said.
The Iowa Gaming Association’s proposed legislation would approve the state’s casinos building sports books in their facilities. Also, Ehrecke said, the bill would give the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission the authority to set rules and regulations and oversee sports betting.
In addition to placing bets in person at casino sports books, wagerers could bet on their smartphones after establishing an account in person at a casino. Ehrecke said that would help make sure players are at least 21 years of age.
House Speaker Linda Upmeyer indicated lawmakers will discuss sports betting legislation when the session begins January 14. “That’s just a really interesting topic. I’m looking forward to see what Iowans want done with that or not done with that maybe.”
