Iowa Lottery Exploring Online Sales

The head of the Iowa lottery told state legislators that the lottery is monitoring how online lottery sales are going for other states and may propose online sales in Iowa.

Iowa’s lottery officials have been watching other states that are experimenting with electronic lottery sales with an eye towards making the move to electronic sale in Iowa.

Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich told the Iowa House Government Oversight Committee that Iowa’s lottery will eventually start to lose money if it doesn’t adapt “to player expectations for convenience and use of technology.”

He also told the committee that the state attorney general opinion concludes that the lottery has the authority to conduct “internet gaming.”

Rich said he believes it’s a “matter of time” before online lottery ticket sales become “socially acceptable.”
