IPI Exempt from Hiring Standard

Imperial Pacific, operator of the only casino in the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, has won a two-year exemption from a rule requiring businesses there to hire U.S. residents for 30 percent of its labor force.

Imperial Pacific International, which runs a casino resort of the same name on the Pacific island of Saipan, has been granted a two-year exemption from a hiring standard that requires businesses to hire U.S. residents to fill 30 percent of construction jobs, Post Guam reports. Saipan is part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S.-controlled territory.

Since 2017, the Philippines has been the primary source of IPI’s construction staff, the Post reported. IPI CEO Mark Brown said the company is now is trying to hire construction workers in South Korea and Taiwan, which are on the list of H-2B eligible nations.
