IPI Workers: We Were Shortchanged

Laborers who worked on the Imperial Pacific Resort in Saipan say they were not paid in full after their employment ended. The workers, whose visas expired at the end of January, began leaving Saipan last weekend.

Brown: Seasonal workers paid in full

Construction workers who worked on the Imperial Pacific Resort on the island of Saipan say their final paychecks fell short of what they were informed by the owner, Hong Kong-listed Imperial Pacific International.

According to Marianas Variety, 800 H-2B seasonal laborers, whose work visas expired at the end of January, say IPI promised to pay them through the end of the month, the day their contract ended, and also include paid time off. The workers say their final paychecks do not reflect that agreement. The workers looked for help to the United States Department of Labor; Saipan is part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory.

In related news, according to Radio New Zealand, IPI CEO Mark Brown said the construction workers were paid in full on the first of February.
