Ireland Casino Resort Nixed

City planners in Tullamore, County Offaly in Ireland have shot down plans for a casino resort with a five-story hotel in the community. Reports indicate the plan did not pass muster partly “on aesthetic grounds” and would conflict with the Malt House (l.).

Plan included conference facilities

Irish businessman Patrick Leneghan has been denied permission to develop a casino and hotel in Tullamore, County Offaly, according to the Irish Times.

The city planning commission turned thumbs down on a proposal by the Bridge House Hotel magnate to develop a five-story, 86-room hotel and complex including a conference center, retail outlets, restaurants and bars and a casino. Leneghan estimated the project would create 100 new local jobs.

The proposal was denied “partly on aesthetic grounds,” the Times reported. Planners ruled the development would have a “profound negative impact on the appearance and visual amenity of the streetscape of Tullamore” and would “conceal from view the historic nature of the industrial Malt House.”

They added that the project did not have enough parking.
