Irish Gambling Regs Delayed Until 2021

An overhaul of Ireland’s gambling regulatory framework will be put off until at least 2021, Irish Minister of Justice Helen McEntee said. Ireland’s Gaming and Lotteries Bill 2019 expects to bring a variety of changes, including limits on gaming machines and maximum prizes.

Ireland is also experiencing a rise in online bets and gambling addiction incidence. Deposit limits were implemented for the National Lottery in April as a result. The legislation tries to regulate public safety and consumer well-being, and covers brick-and-mortar and online gambling, according to Gambling News.

The bills will also deal with regulation of advertising, gambling websites and apps. According to McEntee, the main challenges revolved around the size, complexity and technological advances in the gambling industry, making regulation hard to predict.
