Is Buryatia Russia’s Next Gaming Zone?

Lawmakers in Buryatia, a Russian republic in eastern Siberia, want to see the region become the country’s next special gaming and entertainment zone.

According to Asia Gaming Brief, local legislators have pinpointed Baikal Haven on Lake Baikal as a prime location. The site is near the northern border of Mongolia. If the application is approved at the local level, it will be submitted to federal officials for their consideration. Local lawmakers have estimates that the zone would bring in some RUB300 million (US$4.5 million) a year.

Lake Baikal is the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lakes and has been a tourist attraction for hundreds of years. It’s located on the Mongolian border with Russia.
