Italy’s most enduring politico, Silvio Berlusconi, has called for reopening the historic Casino in Taormina as part of developing southern Italy.
Plans and funds for the casino development are already in place, along with a contract for a bridge across the Strait of Messina. When politics went against his Forza Italia party in previous elections, the plans were shelved, said the former prime minister, who wants to dust them off.
Some ministers have said that licensing casinos could fuel tourism in the area. Before it does that the government wants to ensure that existing casinos are not harmed by the competition.
