Jamaica Eases Travel Requirements

More Asian tourists are expected to visit Jamaica now that visitors’ visas are no longer required to enter the island nation. Officials are hoping to draw more Chinese nationals on vacation to boost the country’s economy.

McNeill: Airports must be more customer-friendly

Speaking at the 2014 Tourism Outlook Seminar earlier this month, Jamaican Tourism and Entertainment Minister Wykeham McNeill said the island nation hopes to attract more Chinese national visitors.

“Earlier this year we made the monumental move of removing the visa requirements for Chin so that Chinese nationals coming to Jamaica for less than 30 days for vacation could come without visas,” he said. “It’s an important move, because if we can really make a dent… even 0.01 per cent of the Chinese tourist population, we are in good business.”

According to Caribbean News Now, McNeill said the government will boost “travel facilitation” measures, including making the airports more customer-friendly. “We think that moving people through your airports as quickly as possible is very important,” McNeill said.

He also said more Jamaicans must enjoy the benefits of greater tourism to create “a sustainable tourism sector.” The Tourism Linkages Project, launched a year ago, as well as the development of the craft industry are part of a plan aimed at ensuring that more residents benefit from the industry, the News reported.
