Jeju Shinhwa Opening Delayed Again

Casino application not yet processed

The opening of Jeju Shinhwa World, a foreigners-only casino on the holiday island of Jeju, South Korea, has been postponed from January 18 to an unspecified “later date,” says Hong Kong-listed promoter Landing International Development Ltd. The property was originally slated to open in December.

In an email to GGRAsia, a Landing spokesperson wrote, “We submitted our application to relocate our casino in Hyatt Regency Jeju to Jeju Shinhwa World to the Jeju government in December 2017. The government is currently processing our application and we expect the casino transfer to be approved after the next sitting of congress in February.”

Until then, Landing will continue to operate its existing casino at the Hyatt Regency, which includes 28 gaming tables and 16 slots and electronic table games. The firm is planning for 160 tables and 240 slots and ETGs at the new casino.

According to CalvinAyre.com, Landing has hired some 1,900 employees, mostly islanders, for its new resort complex, which spans 2.5 million square meters (618 acres). Those workers reportedly are concerned they may lose their jobs due to the latest delay.
