JRA Suspends 150-Plus Racehorses

The Japan Racing Association has suspended 156 racehorses from the upcoming calendar due to allegations that they were given an illegal performance-enhancing drug.

The Japan Racing Association last week suspended 156 racehorses following allegations that they were given an illegal performance-enhancing drug called theobromine. According to Inside Asian Gaming, theobromine is “both a stimulant and an agent that strengthens cardiac activities.”

A Japanese firm, Nosan Corp., which produces animal feed, was the reported source of the drug, but says it is unaware of how it ended up in their product.
