Judge Remains in Sands Wrongful Termination

Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez may continue presiding over a wrongful termination suit against billionaire Sheldon Adelson and Las Vegas Sands, Chief Judge David Barker ruled. Attorneys for Adelson and Las Vegas Sands promised to appeal the ruling to the Nevada Supreme Court.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson lost another bid to remove Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez from a wrongful termination suit against him, but he isn’t done trying.

Former Sands Macau President Steven Jacobs in 2010 filed the complaint against Adelson and Las Vegas Sands, saying they fired him for refusing to take part in corrupt and illegal activities to advance Las Vegas Sands’ interests in Asia.

Adelson claims Gonzalez is biased against him and Las Vegas Sands, inserted herself into media coverage in the matter, and says she should be removed from the case.

Clark County District Court Chief Judge David Barker disagreed and ruled Gonzalez is not biased against Adelson or Las Vegas Sands and will remain on the case.

Adelson’s attorneys delayed the proceedings many times by challenging the court’s jurisdiction, Gonzalez’ handling of the case. and promised to appeal Barker’s most recent decision to the Nevada Supreme Court.

While he continues fighting to remove Gonzalez from the case, Adelson now faces 49 hours of pretrial questioning by Jacobs’ attorneys.

Las Vegas Sands attorneys in February subjected Jacobs to 49 hours of pretrial questioning.
