When it comes to sports betting ads, Kansas lawmakers have gone straight for the jugular with SB 432, supported by both Democrats and Republicans.
The bill, aimed at reducing gambling promotions, now moves to the Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs. It would prohibit advertising on internet sites and mobile applications, reducing exposure among children, other minors and susceptible gambling populations.
The proposal restricts advertising content, timing and location, and limits in-platform advertising to users and ongoing contracts expiring by July 1, according to CDC Gaming Reports.
Those in support of the bill insist such a ban is required to stem the rise in gambling addiction. The legislation goes back a year ago to Ontario, which passed a similar law to protect minors by limiting exposure to gambling promotions. But critics say it infringes on free speech and individual choice. They prefer responsible gaming ads instead of a ban.
