Kenya Company Must Pay €128M in Back Taxes

The Kenyan Revenue Authority has ordered East African betting operator SportPesa to pay €80 million (US$134.5 million) in past-due taxes, plus interest and penalties for arrears that mounted up between 2015 and 2018.

East African betting operator SportPesa is under orders from the Kenya tax collector to pay €80 million (US$87 million) in back taxes, plus interest and penalties amounting to €128 million (US$134.5 million). According to SBC News, the Kenyan Revenue Authority says Pevans East Africa, the holding company of SportPesa, intentionally withheld taxes from 2015 to 2018.

The KRA said SportPesa failed to deduct a “20 percent withholding tax charge on winnings paid to customers.”
