Kenya Mulls 20 Percent Sports Betting Tax

Kenya’s National Treasury is advocating restoring its controversial 20 percent blanket tax over all wagering verticals, i.e. all wagers on a single race.

The National Treasury has submitted its tax proposal as part of the 2021/2022 National Budget, whose final amendments are under review by Treasury Secretary Ukur Yattani. He will present the final proposal on June 10.

The Uhuru Kenyatta government first proposed this tax in its 2020 budget, but it was halted after the Nairobi State House finance committee held it to be an illegal double tax.

The previous year the government had ordered financial services to terminate business services for license bookmakers. At the same time the government ordered bookmakers SportPesa and Betin terminated.

However SportPesa is now under new owners and the government has welcomed new sportsbook companies.
