KSA Fines 5 Companies €26 Million

Dutch gaming regulator KSA has issued the largest fines ever on online gaming companies since the sector was legalized in October 2021. It has fined five Maltese companies more than €26 million for offering online gaming to Dutch customers without a license.

KSA, the Netherlands gaming authority, has levied fines of more than €26 million on five Malta-based gaming companies, including N1 Interactive, which had the largest fine of €13 million. The next highest was Videoslots, which was fined nearly €10 million.

CDC Gaming Reports stated that these are the highest fines issued so far by the KSA. The agency stated that none of the companies had the licenses required to offer internet gaming to the Dutch.

The KSA informed the companies of the fines in December, prompting them to sue to keep the sanctions private. They lost their privacy appeals last week, and the announcement followed shortly thereafter. The court cases themselves remain pending.

KSA Chairman René Jansen said the agency wanted to impress upon the companies the seriousness of the violations. “Player safety comes first. A fine hits them where it hurts, in the wallet,” said Jansen.

One reason N1 Interactive’s fine was so high was previous violations, including falsely displaying NSA’s symbol on its website. Only properly licensed operators are allowed to display this symbol.

Online gambling has been legal in the Netherlands since October 1, 2021. So far, 24 operators have been issued permits to allow Dutch to gamble on their websites.
