Kuala Lumpur Blocks Phone Bets

Since January, the government of Kuala Lumpur has intercepted more than 12,000 telecommunications to curb ads for online betting. Police are working on the campaign with the Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Do gaming sites offer easy loans, access to women?

Kuala Lumpur has taken a firm stand against illegal online betting, according to a report in the Malaysian Star. Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said law enforcement is working with the Communications and Multimedia Commission and telecommunication companies to block phone numbers found to be advertising the bets.

“Between January and April, MCMC directed telcos to block 12, 449 phones lines which were found to have elements of gambling,” he said, and added that commissioners also investigated more than 400 public complaints about ads posted on social media platforms like WhatsApp.

MP Er Teck Hwa has called on the government to do more to stem the social problems associated with online gambling. He said access to such sites has been made easier through SMS advertisements, and warned that gaming sites have offered access to loans and even to women to lure new gamblers, the Star reported.
