Casino workers rallied near Macau’s Grand Lisboa last Monday to demand higher pay, bigger bonuses and increased benefits.
The rally, the second targeting SJM Holdings and the latest of several organized by labor group Forefront of Macau Gaming, drew about 1,000 people, according to news reports.
FMG President Ieong Man Teng, who has led protests against Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment said there would be a demonstration joined by casino workers from all six gaming operators on Monday, August 25, where he said he expects the number of participants would be “several thousand”. He said the goal of the demonstration would be to demand basic welfare for casino workers, holiday benefits and a subsidy for typhoon weather. The group also wants their requests passed to Chief Executive Chui Sai On.
SJM Managing Director Angela Leong responded to the earlier protest by saying that communication between staff and management is strong, while a statement signed by CEO Ambrose So and circulated internally said Forefront is not qualified to speak for SJM employees and the company will take measures to prevent and resist activities that may harm the welfare of staff and the corporation.
