Labor Talks Move Forward in Detroit

Detroit’s casinos and the unions representing some 6,000 of their workers say they’re closing in on a new labor contract. The breakthrough appears to have come in the form of an agreement on health-care benefits, a sticking point throughout month of negotiations.

Representatives for Detroit’s three casinos and members of the Detroit Casino Council say that after several months of talks they have finally begun to make significant progress toward reaching a new labor deal.

Talks between the operators—MotorCity Casino, Greektown Casino and MGM Grand Detroit—and the workers group started in August ahead of the existing contract’s expiration in October.

The council said the two sides have advanced significantly on negotiating a health care package, the biggest sticking point, according to news reports, and that “tentative agreements” have been reached on other unspecified provisions of a new agreement.

The council represents more than 6,000 union members of Local 24 of UNITE HERE, Local 324 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, UAW Local 7777 and Teamsters Local 372.

Negotiations are scheduled to resume December 1.
