Animal welfare advocate Lara Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, recently joined greyhound racing opponents at a fundraiser in Greenwich, Connecticut to promote Amendment 13, which would ban commercial greyhound racing in Florida after December 31, 2020. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi also attended the event, “Protect Dogs—Yes on 13,” sponsored by the greyhound protection group GREY2K USA and the Humane Society of the United States.
Florida HSUS Director Kate MacFall said Trump’s support has helped attract attention to Amendment 13 and has boosted fundraising. “It’s fabulous for us and we are celebrating that,” she said.
MacFall noted commercial greyhound racing is illegal in 40 states, with two-thirds of the remaining U.S. dog tracks located in Florida.
The fundraiser was held despite uncertainty whether the amendment will be on the November ballot, due to a recent court decision. However, advocates believe they will win in an appeal.
Trump helped create the Pets-for-Vets program, which encourages pairing pets with ailing veterans. “If we can do it at no or little cost to the taxpayer due to the approach of creating public-private partnerships and new synergies, then all the better. Our Pets-for-Vets concept is designed to connect pets with vets and to scale it in a way that promotes mental health and animal welfare,” Trump said.
