The Las Vegas City Council has rejected plans to build a new casino in the Westside area of the Nevada city.
Council members voted 6-1 against the proposal during a hearing on June 18, 3News LV reported. This all but confirmed the project will no longer go ahead in its current format.
Developers had hoped to build a multi-story casino near Jackson and F Street. It was initially called Harlem Nights but was later renamed the Jackson Hotel Resort & Casino project.
Speaking at the hearing, Mayor Shelley Berkley urged developers to re-think the size of the property. Early plans were for a 60-story building though this was later reduced to 22. However, this still exceeded the area’s seven-story zoning limit.
Local Concerns Over Excess Traffic from Westside Casino
Council members also considered concerns flagged by the public in the Westside area. This included that the new casino could lead to a significant increase in traffic.
Berkley said project developers had not done enough to address these concerns, despite them being raised at previous meetings.
“We have had numerous opportunities to talk about it,” Berkley said, “It is a very exciting project, but from the first time we talked about this when I was a candidate to now, there has been very little progress on bringing the community into this proposal.”
Westside is located just north of the famous Las Vegas Strip.
