The Las Vegas City Council (LVCC) has approved the expansion of the underground transit loop that is currently being constructed by The Boring Company, the developer headed by billionaire Elon Musk.
The tunnel system, which was first approved for 29 miles, will now expand to 34 miles and feature over 50 stops. Originally, it was designed as a transit system for the Las Vegas Convention Center, but the project has expanded to include stops in downtown, Harry Reid International Airport and other prominent locales.
According to the LVCC, new construction will likely begin sometime in early 2023. The first sites for the new expansion will include Circa Las Vegas, the STRAT Las Vegas, the Plaza Hotel Casino and the Fremont Street Experience.
That being said, the project relies on private funding, and casinos will have to pay for the construction of their own stop if they wish to connect to it in the future, per KSNV Las Vegas.
In an online post, The Boring Co. said that it was “excited to build a safe, convenient, and awesome transportation system in the City.”
The project first debuted to the public at the CES 2021 convention—it currently loops 1.7 miles around the convention center and is operated with Tesla vehicles.
