Leaders in Niagara Fear New Casinos in Ontario

Leaders in Niagara Falls contend that a plan to spread casinos all over Ontario will hurt the two casinos, including Niagara Fallsview (l.), in their town that have been a financial mainstay for the city for many years.

Leaders in the Ontario, Canada city of Niagara Falls worry that if the provincial government carries out an announced plan of building new casinos across the province that will be a strike at the heart of Niagara’s casino industry, which is an important source of revenue.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation recently announced a modernization and building plan that would create 29 gaming zones, each with a casino. Currently Niagara Falls has two casinos.

Local business leader Bart Maves says this would severely harm the Niagara Falls economy. “I’ve already talked to people at the casinos—we would lose 1,000 jobs overnight,” he told the Bullet News.

Maves has been credited with having brought the two casinos, and thousands of jobs, to Niagara when he was part of the government in the 1990s.
