Legislator Introduces Texas Gaming Bill

Texas state Rep. Carol Alvarado (l.) has introduced HJR47 which would extend state horseracing laws which protecting the interests of the Kickapoo Nation, which operates the state's only tribal casino, the Lucky Eagle. The previous five efforts to bring casino gambling to Texas were unsuccessful, despite promises of revenues and jobs.

For the sixth time, a casino gambling measure has been introduced in the Texas legislature. State Rep. Carol Alvarado’s bill, HJR47, would extend existing state laws allowing horseracing, and protect the interests of the Kickapoo Nation’s Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel, the only tribal-owned casino in Texas.

Supporters said regulated casino gambling could generate significant tax revenues and create thousands of jobs at horse racetracks in Dallas, El Paso, San Antonio and Austin.

Opponents, including the Christian Life Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas,  stated, “At the end of the day, when the legislature meets and considers this issue, we are confident that this legislature, like the previous legislatures, will determine this is not good for the people of Texas.”
