LeoVegas to Oppose Italian Gambling Ad Ban

A ban on gambling advertising has been approved by the Italian government and will go into effect in January. Swedish online gambling provider LeoVegas, however, said it will seek to oppose the ban and “educate” legislators on how the ban will benefit unlicensed providers. The company recently reported a 75 percent increase and revenue and sought to reassure shareholders.

Swedish gaming operator LeoVegas sought to reassure its shareholders that the company will work to overturn a total ban on gambling advertising in Italy.

The Italian government has approved the ban which will go into effect next year.

LeoVegas recently reported a 75 percent rise in revenue for the second quarter and said in its quarterly reports it will be taking steps to combat the ban.

LeoVegas have already filed an official complaint in July with the European Commission, arguing that the ban is in direct conflict with EU laws concerning freedom of trade.

“We firmly believe that such a ban would benefit unlicensed actors, and a debate has now ensued about this, where LeoVegas is engaged and is trying to educate politicians about what we as licensed operators are doing in the areas of sustainability and responsible gaming,” the report reads. “The outcome of the proposal is highly uncertain at present, and we are monitoring developments closely.”

Google Adwords and Facebook have both banned Italian-facing gambling ads from their platforms in preparation for the ban, which recently passed a vote in Parliament and is now law.
