Lithuania Threatens Crack Down on Unlicensed Casinos

Lithuania’s Gaming Control Authority has threatened to crack down on unlicensed online casino operators that are enticing residents to gamble.

It warns that any online casino without a license is operating illegally as set out by the Gaming Law of the Republic of Lithuania.

The Authority said in a statement that it “strongly recommends all online gambling operators, to review all their activities related to remote gambling in the Republic of Lithuania and take actions to ensure that such services are not available for Lithuanian customers.”

It added that actions it is authorized to take include DNS block—which would prevent residents from accessing websites and payment blocking. Such websites will now be on the Authority’s “blacklist” of illegal operators, which currently includes Betway, Unibet, William Hill, PokerStars, Marathonbet and 188 BET.

In 2020 the Lithuanian parliament amended the gaming law to expand the Authority’s market controls and duties.

The Authority added, “The Control Authority strongly recommends all online gambling operators review all their activities related to remote gambling in Lithuania and take actions to ensure that such services are not available for Lithuanian customers.”

The Authority imposed its first fine against an operator last month: against UAB Tete-a-Tete Casino for €15,000 ($18,145).
