State Senator Louis Luchini of Maine, a longtime champion of the expansion of gaming in the Pine Tree State, has retired to join the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The senator’s most recent accomplishment for gaming was to shepherd his bill that would legalize mobile sports wagering. Its fate is uncertain since it remains on the appropriations table—which is considered a waystation between legislature and governor—and hasn’t been removed by Governor Janet Mills yet, despite its passage last summer.
Three years ago Mills commented about a similar bill: “I remain unconvinced at this time that the majority of Maine people are ready to legalize, support, endorse and promote betting on competitive athletic event.”
