Loto-Québec now is taking bets on eSports events via its website, Québec’s provincial gaming operator announced.
“With the increasing popularity of eSports, there is more and more demand for opportunities to bet on this type of competition,” Loto-Québec eSports and Entertainment Betting Director Louis Beaudet said.
Loto-Québec is taking wagers from fans via its Mise-o-jue portion of its betting website. The StarCraft II World Championship Series Summer Circuit was the first eSporting event for which wagers were accepted. That event ran from August 11 through August 14.
No wagering results were available, though, but Loto-Québec will continually track eSports events to better gauge its popularity and regulatory needs.
A skin-betting scandal already arose during an eSporting event during recent months, but Loto-Québec says it is provide a safe, secure, and regulated wagering environment that prevents such fixing scandals.
Loto-Québec also is looking to expand into the gaming industry, and recently sponsored independent gaming developers during the DreamHack Montreal gaming industry trade show.
