LVCVA Approves Underground People Mover

Looking ahead to the day when the expanded Las Vegas Convention Center will be too big to walk, the authority has tapped a company owned by Elon Musk (l.) for a solution. It’s a system of electric vehicles that will rapidly move more than 4,400 passengers per hour on a mile-long loop of below-ground tunnels.

LVCVA Approves Underground People Mover

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has voted to go forward with an underground people mover at the Las Vegas Convention Center designed by a company of Elon Musk’s.

With only Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman dissenting, the LVCVA board OK’d a $48.7 million contract with The Boring company to design and construct the system, which will carry passengers in electric vehicles around a mile-long loop that also will feature passenger stations and pedestrian and vehicular tunnels.

The Convention Center is undergoing a nearly $1 billion expansion that will bring the facility to some 200 acres in breadth. The walk from end to end will stretch about 1.5 miles, necessitating the need for a rapid and efficient solution for pedestrian traffic.

The loop will be designed for ridership of no less than 4,400 passengers per hour and is scalable depending on Convention Center attendance.

“Las Vegas will continue to elevate the experience of our visitors with innovation, such as with this project, and by focusing on the current and future needs of our guests,” authority CEO Steve Hill said.

“The Boring Company is excited to contribute to the future of Las Vegas, and work with leaders who have a vision for transportation,” company president Steve Davis said.
