Macau Calls for Improved Construction Safety

The government of Macau is developing new safety regulations for construction sites in the wake of several on-the-job deaths. Macau is in the midst of a building boom on the Cotai Strip, even as its gaming revenues continue to plummet.

Lawmakers in Macau are calling for stricter safety rules after several workers died at casino sites in March. Reuters reports that the city’s Labor Affairs Bureau is drafting new occupational safety regulations to be submitted to the government sometime this year.

Four workers have died in industrial accidents this year, three in March alone. In 2014, a total of seven workers were killed on the job. Some 60,000 construction workers are now on the job in Macau, which is developing a number of luxury resorts on the Cotai Strip.

“Our government doesn’t have adequate certification for the workers … just simple training, not legislation for the workers or a more technical system,” said Leo Lo, secretary general of the Macau Construction Association.
