Every year, tens of millions of Chinese travel for Golden Week, October 1-7, a holiday that commemorates the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The holiday known as Golden Week is traditionally one of the strongest visitation periods for Macau. This year’s celebration could be fairly robust if Covid-19 infection rates on the mainland continue to stabilize and improve.
“We expect that Macau may see around 20,000 tourist arrivals a day during the remaining days this month, and into September,” with up to 30,000 visitors a day during the holiday week, Macau Travel Industry Council President Andy Wu Keng Kuong told GGRAsia.
The number of “mid-risk” and “high-risk” regions for Covid-19 in Mainland China has decreased, and Guangdong Province—Macau’s major feeder market for tourist arrivals—has also recently eased travel-related restrictions.
“Macau’s visitor arrivals for the National Day holiday could look to exceed 30,000 a day, which would be a scenario similar to May’s Labor Day break,” Wu said. “That is subject to changes in the mainland’s Covid-19” situation.
