Macau Greyhounds Homeward Bound

It looks like the long search for homes for out-of-work racing greyhounds in Macau is nearing an end. According to the president of the local animal welfare society, most of the dogs will be rehomed by the end of March.

The last of some 530 racing greyhounds put out of work by the closing of the Macau Canidrome should be in new homes by the end of March, according to Albano Martins, president of Anima, the Society for the Protection of Animals in Macau.

Martins told the Macau Daily Times there are only 190 dogs that still need to have their adoptions finalized, and there are plans in place to complete that process. Martins acknowledged the “good will” of the Yat Yuen Company, owner of the former track, for agreeing to pay for all the expenses involved in the rehoming. He called the outcome “a great relief for all of us and for the Macau government.”
