Macau Junket Boss Levo Chan Charged by Prosecutor

Levo Chan, a former chief executive of Macau Legend Development and onetime boss of Macau junket runner Tak Chun, has been formally charged with gambling crimes that could put him in prison for 20 years.

Chan was detained in January on suspicion of running an illegal gambling syndicate, money laundering, “betting under the table” and online gambling. Though nine people were charged in the case, only Chan was remanded into custody. He has been detained in Coloane Prison ever since.

According to Macau Business, in January, Macau’s Judiciary Police (PJ) announced that Chan’s case was directly linked to the one that led to the arrest and detainment of Suncity CEO Alvin Chau. Chau was sent to Coloane Prison in late November; Suncity announced the cessation of its junket business in mid-December. The PJ said evidence suggests that the two groups worked together.

The prosecutor’s office completed its investigation into Chau on May 26 in a case involving a total of 21 people. The case, linked to HK$800 billion (US$102 billion) in alleged illegal gambling funds, will go to trial on September 2.

The charges against both men followed a crackdown by law enforcement on illicit capital outflows from the Chinese mainland.
