Macau Legend Eyes Portugal

The Macau casino operator global growth strategy has turned toward Portugal in the form of plans for a $200 million-plus non-gaming resort near Lisbon. Cape Verde and Laos also are in the company’s sights.

Macau casino operator Macau Legend Development plans to invest more than €200 million (US2 million) in a non-gaming resort near Lisbon.

Portuguese media said the project will be located in Setubal, south of the capital, and will include hotel, residential and retail attractions and a marina.

Macau Legend has been aggressively looking to expand outside its home market and earlier this year announced plans to invest €250 million in a resort with a casino in Cape Verde. In May, the company said it was buying the Savan Vegas Hotel and Entertainment Complex in Laos.

The Cape Verde project will encompass 152,700 square meters and will feature restaurants, retail shops and entertainment attractions, a marina and meetings and convention facilities. Estimates say it will boost tourism to the island to 2 million visitors a year from around 600,000 currently.
