Macau Police Say Officer Spied for Loan Sharks

A veteran inspector with the city’s Judiciary Police has been arrested on suspicion of tipping off a gang of loan sharks about pending moves the police planned to make against their operations in casinos and other locations. Authorities say the officer was behind more than a dozen leaks to the gang.

An inspector in the criminal division of Macau’s Judiciary Police has been arrested on suspicion of leaking confidential investigative information to a syndicate of loan sharks.

A police spokesperson said the inspector came under scrutiny after his activities were revealed by a member of the syndicate who’d been arrested earlier this year.

The Judiciary Police said a subsequent investigation revealed the inspector, a veteran officer with more than 10 years with the agency, had shared advance knowledge of moves law enforcement planned to make against the gang’s operations at casinos and other locations on at least 13 occasions dating back to last fall.

The JP said it has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the officer and turned the investigation over to the Public Prosecutions Office.
