Macau Remains Tightest of Labor Markets

The casino boom has gifted the Chinese territory with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world. As new data released for the first four months of 2019 show, unemployment stands at a mere 1.7 percent𑁋and that’s down slightly from last year.

Macau’s famously low unemployment rate has gotten lower, shrinking to 1.7 percent through the first four months of the year.

Data compiled by the government’s Statistics and Census Service shows the decline was slight compared to the same period last year, just 0.2 percent, but it works out to all of around 6,600 unemployed people out of a total population of roughly 633,000𑁋and 10 percent of those are reported to be new entrants to the labor market seeking their first jobs.

The total number of people employed was 385,300 for the period, representing a decline of 1,800 compared to the same period last year.

Of those holding Macau citizenship, the number of employed fell by 1,900 to 280,100, but this was largely offset by an increase of 1,200 in the number of those working in the casino sector and related businesses.
