Macau Theme Park: Wave of the Future?

Some industry analysts and lawmakers, as well as the Mainland Chinese government, say Macau doesn’t have enough mainstream attractions beyond gaming. Sands China could change that with its new virtual-reality theme park on the Cotai Strip.

In an effort to bring unique nongaming amenities to Macau, Sands China and Hong Kong firm Planet J will bring “a pioneering family entertainment concept” to the Cotai Strip, reports Forbes.

Planet J at Sands Cotai Central, which is set to open sometime this year, is being promoted as the “world’s first player-centric live-action-role-play (LAPR) theme park,” says developer Jumpin’ Gym Digital Entertainment.

“Planet J is a truly new revolutionary model, breaking out from entertainment offered by conventional theme parks,” adds Jumpin’ Gym Chairman Damon Chan.

A so-called “Magic Scroll”?actually a smartphone equipped with apps and connected to a master computer?will allow guests to “adopt fantasy personae to act out a series of customized physical and intellectual challenges to drive evil from the mythical Stone Kingdom,” reports the publication.

Designers who have worked at Disney resorts and Universal Studios are creating the 100,000-square-foot (9,400-square-meter) air-conditioned attraction. The target is not just families with children, but a demographic Planet J calls “kidults.”

“The current offerings targeting children, like those on the Cotai Strip, are not good enough,” China Market Research Group founder Shaun Rein told Forbes.

Planet J says the new experience will attract 3 million visitors during its first year of operation.
