Macau’s Smoking Lounges Running out of Time

Macau’s gaming halls are moving slowly to establish legally sanctioned smoking lounges. Of more than 400 lounges that must be certified by January, the Health Bureau officials have approved less than 50.

Some 404 smoking lounges inside 27 Macau gaming halls must be approved for operations under new smoking standards by January 1. To date, only 49 have completed the approval process.

In July 2017, Macau lawmakers approved new standards that banned tableside tobacco use in VIP rooms, set new cleaner-air standards and gave operators a year to comply. Three government departments must inspect the properties to ensure they are in compliance: the Health Bureau, the Fire Services Bureau and the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau.
